Where it all started
Even before I was 12, I was already fascinated by cameras.
Looking back, I think my love of photography started even earlier than I realised. I found this photograph of me as a child, surrounded by an explosion of colour and already carrying a camera around my neck.
Then, when I was about 12 years old, I got my first SLR film camera — a Chinon CM-4S. That was the beginning of a proper photographic journey that has now lasted more than four decades.
46 Years – Still Going Strong
A lifetime of photography.
I still have that very same Chinon CM-4S today — and incredibly, it still works 46 years later.
A lot has changed since those early days of film. There were rolls of film to load, photographs to develop and no instant way of knowing whether you had captured the picture you wanted. But those early experiences started a passion that has stayed with me ever since.
What catches my eye
I photograph whatever catches my eye.
I don't really have one particular genre of photography. My camera goes wherever I go, and if something looks interesting, beautiful or colourful, I'll probably take a photograph of it.
That could be a landscape, aviation, a holiday, a theme park, transportation, nature, wildlife, architecture or an amazing historic site such as the pyramids in Egypt or Machu Picchu.
For me, the subject isn't the important part. It's that moment when I see something and think, "That's worth a photograph."
Today
From film to mirrorless.
Photography has changed enormously since I was 12. Film cameras have given way to digital, and today I'm shooting with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II.
The technology is very different from that first Chinon, but the important bit hasn't changed. I still take a camera with me, I still look for something that catches my attention, and I still get that little buzz when I capture a photograph I'm really pleased with.
